Things of the now:

- Tomorrow, Dad and I are going on a bike ride in Sequim. I have not actually ridden a bike in something like 4 years, so this will be an adventure. That thing about never forgetting how to ride a bike is a cliche for a reason, right?

- Re the Watchmen trailer: my first impression is "Oh God, it looks so badass, I must now go and read the book again." The second is the more trepidatious "How do I get everyone I know to read the book before seeing the movie?"

- I am seriously coveting Dr Horrible's goggles.

- This is my monthly weekend off (hurrah!), which is exquisitely well timed because otherwise I would have to try to take time off work to go see Batman. And that's silly.

- The library continues to taunt by listing all of the Nero Wolfe novels in its catalogue but having most of them be "On Order" which means "We're attempting to buy this book but the gods only know when you will actually be able to hold it in your hot little hands". I am going to have to go to the bookstore sometime soon. Oh, the hardship. 8)

jewelry advice plz halp: how to make a brown dress formal

So I'm going to an aunt's wedding in like THREE WEEKS. I bought the dress (light brown, empire waist, pleated), the shoes (slightly darker brown), and a hat (lighter brown than both dress and shoes, with a chocolate ring around the rim and a removable chocolate colored ribbon around the middle).

I'm a bit dismayed because I love all of the clothing individually, but all brown will make me look like a girls scout unless I figure out how to dress it up with jewelry. For a wedding!

So here's where you come in, lovely beading community. Could I ask for some necklace advice?

Here's what I've got:

-Green leaf beads with smaller copper/gold beads.
-Copper, taupe, light gold beads
-Various brown metallics
-various green metallics

I don't want to do turqouise or anything of a wooden texture because I think it would make my outfit look too casual. Oh, and for reference, my skin tone is caucasian, not fair but barely tan. How do I make a light brown dress formal?

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

Help!

My grandparents 50th anniversary is coming up. In the planning, my dad asked both of them a lot of questions about their dating etc, and my grandma mentioned that one of her fondest memories is getting fresh peach ice cream with my grandpa from an ice cream parlor.

Without thinking, I told my dad I'd make some for the party. I really don't know much about making ice cream, so I figured I'd just find a recipe, but I'd like the opinion of someone more knowledgeable than me.

How does this recipe look?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

dire straits

dire straits
-To say that someone is in dire straits is to say that they are experiencing tremendous hardships and that their troubling circumstances do not look like they will turn out well. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find too much information on the origins of this phrase except that it was probably used for at least a century (if not longer) by the 1980's. At this point it was already considered a cliche expression. It gained a popular resurgence, however, due to the success of a British pop group called Dire Straits, which was formed in 1977. As to why these two particular words were linked, researchers are uncertain. However, the expression does make sense since dire means 'causing great fear of harm or calamity, indicating trouble' and straits, 'a narrow passageway, difficult times.'

Friday Five -- July 18, 2008

This week's questions were suggested by [info]frieliegh.

1. If you could change one life-changing event in the life of someone important to you, would you?
2. Which do you think is easier to do, being friends for many years, or being life partners for many years?
3. Have you ever walked away from someone you considered a friend?
4. If you had to choose between telling the truth and hurting a friend or lying and making them happy, which would you choose?
5. Which would you rather hear--the truth which will hurt, or the comforting lie?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers.

Actual question asked by an actual patron (who had late books):

"If I return those books, do the late fees stay on there?"

::facepalm::

I am currently counting down minutes till I can go home and watch the Watchmen trailer.

Dear Lady Who Loves Travel Books,

I cannot do more than one thing at a time - literally, the computer is not set up that way. Thus, I am not able to check your account for due dates, check both your daughters' accounts, check you out, sign your daughters up for summer reading, and put books on hold for you at the same time. To do that, I would need four computers, several extra arms and, possibly, another head to store my extra brain.

And then I could go and work in a freak show instead of the library.

Easterbunny Planet

I have an idea!

Why don't I link to something that made me giggle.

Easterbunny Planet Get Name (Yes, I clicked on it for the headline alone.)

The Paris-based International Astronomical Union (IAU) has decided to honor a Kuiper Belt object, 2005 FY9, with the name of Makemake, after the creator of humanity and the god of fertility in the Rapa Nui culture of Easter Island.

[snip]

Realizing that "Easterbunny" didn't quite meet the sobriety expected of a solar system body, Brown hunted around for a rabbit god in native American lore, of which there are many examples.

"However, they usually have names such as 'Hare' or, better, 'Big Rabbit'," said Brown.

"I spent a while considering 'Manabozho,' an Algonquin rabbit trickster god, but I must admit, perhaps superficially, that the 'Bozo' part at the end didn't appeal to me."

Eventually Brown lighted on Makemake, worshipped as a bringer of fertility, because his wife was pregnant with their daughter at the time.

I'd just like to remind everyone that Pluto is still a planet to me.

Business Card Busy-ness

It's all go at MOO Towers at the moment. We're bug squishing (virtual, not literal), printing, packing and party-planning.

The party's shaping up rather nicely, so we're hoping it should be lots of fun. If you're in London next Thursday, come along for a drink - and if you're quick, a wee bite to eat. If last years was anything to go by, it should be full of lovely people - and if you don't know anyone when you get there, you should definitely make a few friends before you head off home.More )

computer

computer, n. [kuhm-pyoo-ter, kŭm-pyōō-tər]
-The modern definition of this word is 'an electronic processing machine designed for the storage of data, performance of mathematical and logical tasks, and the display of results from these tasks.' This definition was coined in either 1941 or 1946. Prior to that, it was defined as 'a mechanical calculating machine' in 1897 and as 'a person who computes' in 1646. This noun was formed from English compute and the suffix -er, describing a person who performs the joined verb. Compute was borrowed either from French computer 'to compute' or directly from Latin computare 'to count, to sum up.' Computare was a combination of Latin com- 'together' and putare 'to settle an account, to count.' Interestingly, English computacion, the precursor to modern computation, was in use prior to compute by about 250 years. It was borrowed from Old French computation, a term used among scholars taken from Latin computationem, from computare.

14 Years Old

Guess what.

14 year old drunk girls can't be raped because they're drunk, see, and that meant the consented.

No, really.

Having sex with a drunken 14-year-old he had plied with alcohol was not a criminal offence by former Calgary man, a judge ruled yesterday.

Justice Peter McIntyre said there was insufficient evidence the girl didn't consent to having sex with Trevor Byron Niebergall.

But McIntyre did find Niebergall guilty of sexual assault for placing his genitals on the girl's face after she passed out -- an act the offender captured on his cellphone camera and showed to co-workers.

[snip]

McIntyre said because the girl drank so heavily and had little recollection of events at the party, he could not accept her claim she didn't agree to have sex.

Birth Control = Abortion in the US?

Damn it.

In a spectacular act of complicity with the religious right, the Department of Health and Human Services Monday released a proposal that allows any federal grant recipient to obstruct a woman's access to contraception. In order to do this, the Department is attempting to redefine many forms of contraception, the birth control 40% of Americans use, as abortion. Doing so protects extremists under the Weldon and Church amendments. Those laws prohibit federal grant recipients from requiring employees to help provide or refer for abortion services.

Read the rest here.

More thoughts later.
